At about 2 a.m. today, police and firefighters were dispatched to the 700 block of W. Sepulveda Street in San Pedro on reports of a car crashing into a home. The victim was identified as 17-year-old Kayla Yolanda Huerta.
Police and firefighters found her inside the vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics attempted to save her, but Huerta was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Huerta was inside the vehicle when she was shot, and her vehicle subsequently rolled forward hitting a cement wall along Sepulveda street. According to Officer Rosario Herrera of the department’s Media Relations Division, the suspect is believed to be a Hispanic male.
Clarissa Hernando, the victim’s cousin, has set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money to cover funeral costs and possibly a trust for her 3-year-old daughter. Hernando stated on the GoFundMe page, “She is a beautiful young girl who was trying to finish high school and had plans to start a trade school so she can support her daughter.”
Huerta’s slaying is the third homicide in San Pedro within the last seven days. Homicide detectives with the Los Angeles Department’s Harbor Division are seeking anyone with information regarding the homicide; they can be reached at (310) 361-3068.
