St. Paddy’s Day has become synonymous with drinking, so much so that according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 269 people were killed by drunk drivers on St. Patrick’s Day over the years 2007-2011.
In 2009 alone, 37% of all crash fatalities on St. Paddy’s Day involved drunk drivers. In 2010, 80% of the St. Patrick’s Day drunk driving deaths involved drivers who were nearly twice the legal limit.
As a result of startling numbers such as these, police throughout Southern California have been making an increasingly concentrated effort to crackdown on drunk driving. Every year there are more DUI checkpoints than the previous year, and subsequently, there are more arrests.
